5 Tips to Conventional Publishing

So your manuscript is done? CONGRATULATIONS! Now the work begins. Here are 5 Tips that will significantly increase your chances of getting your work published.
1 Know the lingo. Get to know the words like “unsolicited” which means that no one at the publishing house asked for the submission. If you are in a position where you can not afford, or simply do not wish to hire an agent, you may need to solicit by contacting the publishing houses of your choice to pitch your material.
Simply go onto Google and search under, BOOK PUBLISHING TERMINOLOGY or PUBLISHING GLOSSARY.
2 Start small. Try getting published in a magazine or newspaper first. Being able to write in your query letter that you are a published author will give you a boost.
3 Do your research. Read the publications you are submitting to know the style of the writers they accept. Know the kinds of books that the publishers you are looking at are publishing. Get the names of the editors that are prominent in your field. You can call up a publishing company and ask (for example) “Who edits your non-fiction books?” To Stay out of the slush piles you need to remember, if you submit to nobody, then nobody will receive what you submit. So, if you’re using a reference book-the Writer’s Market, for instance, make sure it’s the latest edition. Addressing your query to someone who left the agency three years ago shows a lack of research on your part and can prejudice some readers against you before you’ve even begun your pitch.
4 Query. Contact by sending a letter describing your book or article (query letter).
DO NOT send full manuscripts unless you are invited to do so. Again, Google is your friend! Do a search on QUERY LETTERS and there is so much information to help you out there. Just make sure that you are mimicking a letter that fits the type of work you are submitting. For example, a query letter selling a self help book wont look the same as one selling a racy romance novel. Typically the editors are looking for different styles.
5 Stay Strong and BELEIVE. The whole publishing process and putting yourself as well as your hard work out there is not for the faint of heart. Rejections are part of the fun. Have a celebration every time you send out a query or sample chapter that gets rejected because it means you are one step closer to a YES! Reward your efforts not just the results. Having a coach to keep you working in the right direction and encourage you along the way has been the way to go for thousands of authors; yes, even the most famous ones!
